Part 3

Chasing Shadows

Chapter 12

Shadow Watcher

When Quinn entered the dining hall Monday morning cheers erupted among the group having breakfast. Word of Noah Bishop’s capture spread quickly in camp and the news was welcomed by all who had been affected by his crimes the prior year. While Quinn normally avoided the spotlight in situations like this one, she smiled widely at the assembled women. “I’m happy to say that Mr. Noah Bishop is once again behind bars where he belongs. Once they transfer him into federal custody, the court will set a new date for the trial. His disappearing act won’t help him in the court of public opinion from which a jury is chosen. I’m very glad he is so enamored with our fair state.”

“Is there any chance they’ll let him out on bail?” Lily asked in a quiet voice. “I mean, he disappeared once already. I don’t like that he could do that again.” Maria tucked a supportive arm around her girlfriend who clearly was still affected by her kidnapping the prior May.

“Lily, I’d say it’s unlikely. When someone is accused of a crime and escapes before being brought to trial, the court normally places little faith in them acting differently the second time around. Bishop has already demonstrated he can disappear, so I can’t imagine him getting a second chance to do just that.” Quinn pushed the remote possibility of bail to the back of her mind, not giving voice to the thought.

D'Shea noticed May nodding, following the conversation closely. May was in a position similar to Lily, having been kidnapped the prior spring. D’Shea knew she was still healing from the incident, but had observed her growing stronger and more self-assured. She doubted that nightmares or worries plagued the young woman as often as they had right after the kidnapping. May was forward focused, her mind on school and soccer. Evie twisted in her seat and D’Shea’s glance moved to her, away from May.

“I for one am ecstatic that the slimy toad is behind bars,” Evie said bluntly. “He caused enough trouble around here to last decades. At least now, Fieldston’s safe from his influence. And a whole lot of young women are safe from his narrow minded, misogynistic beliefs.” Around the tables heads nodded.

“Quinn, will they add more charges for his escape?” Alex asked. “I mean, he shouldn’t just get away with that. It isn’t fair.”

Quinn smiled. “I’m not sure that fairness has much to do with it. Yes, there will probably be an additional charge or two added, though it’s up to folks higher up on the food chain than I to determine if that would be a state or federal charge. I’ll let them fight it out.”

“I’m just glad it’s over,” May declared, voicing the sentiment of many around the room. With that, most returned to their breakfast conversations.

Quinn settled at the table with Sarge, D’Shea, and Evie. She looked tired, dark circles under her eyes and the gleam normally in her ice blue eyes dulled.
